HLA testing

About HLA

HLA stands for Human, Leucocyte and Antigen, meaning the types of white blood cells, where A, B, O, AB are well known red cell types.

Types of HLA

There are approximately 150 types of HLA, and one person has 6 types of HLA. In the world, every 10000 individuals has the chance of having the same HLA. The chance is higher for Japanese where every 50-1000 individuals has the chance of having the same HLA.

All 6 HLA need to be identical to carry out a bone marrow transplantation, and for cord blood stem cells transplantation, only 4 HLA need to be identical. This is because the umbilical cord blood stem cells are not fully mature and have less chance of denial response.

HLA Type Testing Method

A special stick similar to a cotton bud is used to collect oral buccal samples. It normally takes 10 days to two weeks to have the result of the test.
